Dyle (French) or Dijle (Dutch) or historically the River Dyle in English, is a river in central Belgium, left tributary of the Rupel. It is 86 km (53 mi) long. It flows through the Belgian provinces of Walloon Brabant, Flemish Brabant and Antwerp. Its source is in Houtain-le-Val, near Nivelles in Walloon Brabant.
The most important cities along the Dyle are (starting from the source) Ottignies, Wavre, Leuven and Mechelen. The latter is often called the 'Dijlestad' (Dyle City). The main tributaries of the Dyle are the rivers Demer (in Werchter, Rotselaar municipality), and the Zenne at the Zennegat, on the farthest outskirts of Mechelen, where the canal Leuven-Mechelen also connects. A few hundred metres downstream, the confluence of the Dyle and the Nete at Rumst forms the river Rupel which 12 km further comes into the Scheldt on which the Antwerp seaport is located. The Dyle used to be navigable for small ships from Werchter on, although nowadays commercial and pleasure navigation is limited to Mechelen, the upper locks at Mechelen being closed for navigation.
De Dijle is een rivier die door de Belgische provincies Waals-Brabant, Vlaams-Brabant en Antwerpen stroomt. Ze maakt deel uit van het stroomgebied van de Schelde.
De belangrijkste plaatsen aan de Dijle zijn Ottignies-Louvain-la-Neuve, Waver, Leuven en Mechelen. De rivier heeft een lengte van 86 kilometer.
Deze rivier ontspringt in Houtain-le-Val, een deelgemeente van het Waals-Brabantse Genepiën (Genappe). Aanvankelijk stroomt de Dijle tamelijk ongedwongen in noordoostelijke richting. Ten zuiden van Leuven monden de Thyle, de Train, de Nethen, de Laan en IJse uit in de Dijle; in Leuven zelf ook nog de Voer. In Werchter mondt de Demer uit in de Dijle, die daarna een bocht maakt naar het westen. In Mechelen wordt de Dijle gesplitst in een Binnendijle en een Afleidingsdijle.
Uiteindelijk gaat de Dijle, vlak nadat de Zenne in haar loop uitmondt, in Rumst samen met de Nete over in de Rupel.
