Warning

Please note: To use the services of geocaching.com, you must agree to the terms and conditions in our disclaimer.

Take a walk through rural Berkshire, and stop at the place where many years ago the local people planted an Oak (or two) in honour of Queen Victoria.
The cache is a small box hidden somewhere on the campus of St James Church, which has stood on the site for over 900 years. Close by are a number of Oaks dedicated to various Kings and Queens, and the Queens Oak public house named for the original oak tree that stood on the green. Trust your GPS, but be careful to watch the signal strength, coming at it from certain directions dense tree cover, the church and the hill are all in exactly the WRONG place for getting an accurate position.

The cache is in a usually fairly peaceful spot as the main road has long since been diverted, however watch out for weddings or other events at the church or manor house, and walkers dropping into the pub for a rest stop. They will start to wonder what you are doing wandering around! You could drive to the pub, and find the cache from there, but it is much more fun to explore the Blackwater Valley, or visit the National Trust land around Finchampstead Ridges, and use one of the many footpaths to reach the cache.

Once you've found the cache, go and spend a while in The Queens Oak. If you're lucky you'll find that their Steak and Ale pie is on the specials board.

You do not need to enter the churchyard to find this cache. Please respect the lower level of the churchyard as this is still actively used for burials from the village.

Important: As mentioned above, the cache is close to a church. To help you pick a suitably quiet time to find the cache the church diary is available online.

The cache has been incorrectly replaced on a couple of occasions in the past, so please ensure that the cache is re-hidden properly. The cache should not be visible from any direction, should be totally covered and well into the undergrowth.

By the way, don't forget to have a go at The Royal Oaks Virtual Cache whilst you're here.

Hi I've looked at your cache, and it It looks like your cache has been under the weather for some time. While I feel that Geocaching.com should hold this location for a reasonable amount of time, we can't do so forever. Please either repair/replace this cache, or archive it so that someone else can place a cache in the area, and geocachers can once again enjoy visiting this location.

The Guidelines which can be seen at (visit link) state that a Cache should only be Disabled for a short time usually a few weeks.

If you plan on repairing this cache, please log a note so I don't archive the listing for non-communication. I intend revisiting this cache in 7 days time.

The restoration work on the Church was originally due to run from January to June, hence why it was requested that the cache was disabled and removed just before Christmas. Unfortunately after that there was an issue over the specification and the contractor and the project has been 'about to start' limbo for the past six months - the frustrations of working with a grade one listed building unfortunately.

Current status is final approvals from the Diocese have been received and the church will be closed from early August until around Christmas. Once I know which bits of the area will be closed off to provide a storage area for the contractors (the original contractor was planning to use the area in which the cache was hidden, the new contractor hasn't said where they would like as yet) I'll either replace the cache in it's original spot or relocate it elsewhere out of the way of the contractors.

Just my luck! I finally decided that today would be the day to find this cache and had printed off the details from Navicache, then got an email notification through from here. Never mind, I can wait

Removed the cache temporarily as for part of the preparation for upcoming building work the undergrowth where the cache was hidden was cleared today. Will rehide in a new location once the details of the building work are sorted.
