Sit Down

Cudmore Grove is located at the eastern end of Mersea Island and covers an area of 38 acres and is owned and managed by Essex County Council. It was designated a Country Park in 1975 and is now managed for wildlife and informal recreation. The site comprises an area of grassland; a cliff top grove of oak trees, a small sandy beach…so don’t forget your bucket and spade and fine views across the Colne and Blackwater estuaries.

Erosion of the cliff has exposed sand and gravels which were laid down by the River Thames nearly 300,000 years ago. Bones dating to the same period showed that monkey, bison, beaver, wolf and bear used to live in East Mersea. The cliff is a geological Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI).

Spring and autumn see a variety of visitors from all over the world. Migrating birds often stop here as they arrive on the east coast. Some stay for the summer, others are just passing through, and occasionally rare and unexpected birds arrive, blown off course by offshore winds. The winter too brings with it a variety of wading birds and wildfowl, including large flocks of Brent geese which come to feed on the grazing marshes. The grassland is also rich in animal life and a haven for butterflies and more wildlife can be spotted from the hide overlooking the pond.

Throughout Cudmore Grove are memorial seats. This multi-cache gives you the opportunity to visit many of these seats and answer the questions to find the final co-ordinates for the cache.
