Geocache Description:

Congrats to jackpinesavage4ever, Ben Gates's nemesis and Heereatthewall for FTF!

This cache is a camo’d matchstick container and is located at a marker commemorating the march of the 1st U.S. Dragoons through Boone. Travel Iowa’s website describes the Dragoon Trail: “Dragoons were lightly armed cavalry soldiers who scouted Iowa soon after the Black Hawk Purchase (1832) to put the area under the control of the United States government. Following the course of the Des Moines River, the Dragoons blazed a trail through the newly acquired lands that would soon become the state of Iowa. Dragoons established outposts from present-day Des Moines to Fort Dodge in the spring and summer of 1835.” Nathan Boone, for whom the city of Boone is named, was a son of Daniel Boone. Nathan served second in command to Lieutenant Colonel Stephen Watts Kearney who led three companies of the First Dragoons that were stationed at Old Fort Des Moines. While he was stationed at Old Fort Des Moines, Nathan explored the Des Moines River Valley and in doing so was in Boone County twice.
