If you look at the Shropshire Hills nowadays they seem quiet. Over 2000 years ago all was different. The hills were covered in Iron Age forts and the valleys full of homesteads. Now all that remains to be seen are the shrunken ramparts of once mighty fortifications.
“Iron Age Power House”is the first in a series of 3 caches will take you to see and walk around some of the best Iron Age hill structures in South Shropshire. Each cache contains a board that tells you all about the site, what it was used for and what it would have looked like all those years ago so when you get there just let your imagination run wild.
I have attached a map as a JPG image that shows you a lovely route to take from The Shropshire Hills Discovery Centre in Craven Arms. www.shropshirehillsdiscoverycentre.co.uk
The complete series of caches are:
The car park is the small lay-by at Grid SO 402 846. Then just cross the road, through the gate and follow the path up and onto Hopesay Common. On the way see if you can find the stile carved with a line written by Omar Khayyam! When you get to the top of the common you will see a Copse of Larch in front of you and to the west. Go to the copse and you will get the best view of Burrows Camp across the valley. Unfortunately the camp is on private land and access is not permitted. Stick to the paths and please be careful crossing the barbed wire fence just before the cache, look for where it’s fallen down.
After you have found the cache there is a bench to sit on, rest, drink in the views and imagine what the scenery must have been like in the Iron Age.
I would like to thank the National Trust who manage this common land for their kind permission to place the cache and to Shropshire County Council for their help in setting up this series
