Geocache Description:

The pound in Westerleigh ...a place often driven past. Isn't it interesting how sometimes words we use come from the strangest of origins? You are looking for a disguised container.

The Village Pound or Pinfold in Westerleigh is not the place where you might find your vehicle after it had been towed away! Neither was it the site of the village lockup or Blind House...this was a place to enclose errant animals which had escaped.

The pound would have been quite a feature in the Medieval village. A high walled and lockable structure, it served several purposes; the most common use was to hold stray sheep, pigs and cattle until they were claimed by the owners, usually for the payment of a fine or levy. The pound in Westerleigh can be found in a small area, largely forgotten in the village which is largely a dormitory area for nearby Yate and Bristol.

The village has a long history though and can trace roots in Saxon times; had connections with Royalty in Medieval times and was in years past quite a wealthy area... the Church is Grade I listed, currently under restoration. The Church yard has quite a number of Grade II listed chest tombs.

Parking may be available close by. The road gets busy at times so please take care. Not really suitable for wheelchair or buggy users as the ground at the GZ is uneven.

Well done to BS16 PowerRangers for First to Find

Many thanks to Tim'n'Marion for replacing the cache for us.
