Geocache Description:

Taking you back to the Great Days of the Drive-In Theaters !

speaker pole

This is the location of the old Harford Drive-In Theater.  Both Ms Troll & Mr. Troll used to visit here when we were younger, maybe at the same time, but that we will never know. This drive-in was opened in 1953 and rolled it's last flick in 1973.  Not sure if the competition from the Big M up the road in Churchville caused them to close up, or just a change of the times. The Big M was the oldest Drive-In in MD when it closed in 2005.

The one draw of the drive in was a cheap family outing, usually good food, and car sound.   This was supplied by a speaker hanging on your window, usually of heavy metal construction, weather proof with a volume knob and a call button direct to the snack bar to order more food.

Most speakers used a 70v audio amplifier, with power on the leads to light lights.

Many different manufactures made the speakers, but most had the theatre's name on it to mark it as their own.  Theft was often a problem, so this was a good way to mark them.
