Geocache Description:

The cache is located in Plainview, Texas, a small West Texas town just north of Lubbock. More specifically, it is in the Running Water Draw. Ask a "local," they are overly proud!

Finding this cache requires a 1+ mile walk or bike ride over varied terrain. The trail can be treacherous depending on ground and weather conditions. BE CAREFUL!

The cache is a 4" X 10" X 4" plastic container. Please, as always, feel free to take something from the collection of things. The initial contents of this cache were composed of things that have meaning for me. When deciding what to leave in the cache, think small and add something that means something to you (ie a poem, a photo, etc). However, the usual key chains, chap sticks, and cereal prizes still suffice quite nicely! Happy hunting & enjoy...

Plaidbeard's GyPSies: We've been asked to adopt this cache and have proudly agreed to, as it seems to have been the first to have been planted in the South Plains area and seems to be one of the oldest in Texas as well. The original has disappeared, and we're not surprised because, although it's not a high-traffic area, it is an active dump (not an abandoned one, as it says in the original), and things get pushed around. Large amounts of ground get moved around by large creatures, so the landscape has changed a good deal since the last time we were here. (Trees have also grown up around the original site, making it even less accessible than before.) Where it resides now is not at risk, we don't believe, but one can never know. Kids do play in dumps.

We've put it in a new container (we found what we think was the old one, without the lid), a fund-raiser cookie dough container, spray painted gray to match the surroundings. To honor its 'firstness', we have put in:

A Delaware quarter - the 'first' state
A N. Carolina quarter - 'First' in flight
A dollar bill - for our 'first' president

and some cow items to represent the cows of Plainview; a wooden one, a couple of painted cow stickers, and a Furby cow-wannabe. Thanks to the kindness of Sugarfoot from Houston - some more 'firsts' are on the way.

The entrance we used to use is now blocked off, so we parked at:
34º 10.836
101º 42.530
There are probably other ways in, too.

CPepiton (9/14/03):Special thanks to Plaidbeard's GyPSies for the adoption. Moving to Northern Idaho puts a serious damper on keeping up the cache. Glad to see it's still around if even in a different form. Here's one hint: I always found it more fun to approach the cache from the biker's trailhead. It's a longer walk, but then that's the point. The trail through "the draw" makes for a killer bike ride. Enjoy it...
