Geocache Description:

This event is being organised by Angus cachers.

THE EVENT

Weekend of 9th/10th September 2006

This cache bash should hopefully cater for all cachers. There will be some longer walks/mountain caches for the diehards as well as lots of shorter caches and themed ones for the kids. Some temporary caches /trails will also be set up for kids (and adults) for the weekend. All activities will be based at Scott Lodge, which is primarily used as weekend accommodation by the Boys Brigade. It consists of a large dormitory with 24 beds. It has full facilities for cooking and showering etc. We will post more information about Scott Lodge when we have it! Accommodation will be on a first come first served basis - although obviously organisers will need to be on site.

The main event will be a bring your own BBQ (and beer!) on the Saturday evening- Further details closer to the event

THE MAIN EVENT

TIME:- There will be someone at the lodge from 4pm(ish). The BBQ should  be ready by 6ish.

ACCOMMODATION

As stated previously Scott Lodge will be available (at no charge to yourself). There are a few other possibilities if you don't fancy roughing it:-

Clova Hotel - approx 3 miles down the glen -does B&B and has a bunkhouse (family rooms in the bunkhouse)

Drumshademuir caravan site - Just south of Kirriemuir ( we think this is the closest caravan site to the event)

Kirriemuir Tourist Information has a list of B&Bs and hotels in the area. We also have a copy of this so if you need any contact info - either e mail us or contact Kirrie Tourist info on 01575 574097

Please note though - the campsite on the map close to Scott Lodge is no longer open.

THE AREA

Scott Lodge is located at the head of Glen Clova,  close to the Glen Doll car park. There are some wonderful walks starting from here for all ages and abilities. From Munro bagging to gentle forest walks. The scenery here is spectacular (to say the least) Waterfalls, shallow rivers to splash about in, remote lochs, fairytale glens.... Who could resist??

To get to the Clova/Doll area you will pass through the low lying ground of the Vale of Strathmore, home of pretty towns and villages such as Kirriemuir, home of Peter Pan author JM Barrie and Glamis, the picture postcard village famous for its castle

New caches will be set throughout these areas for the event

GETTING THERE

It should be obvious that this is a very rural location and the easiest way to get there is by car.  There is plenty of public transport servicing local towns and villages - map HERE.  If anyone needs picked up from Kirriemuir and taken to the lodge please let us know on the thread on the Geofrees forums.

MAPS

The set caches are over a wide area and therefore several maps are needed to fully cover the area. The following maps may be useful:-

Landranger Series:-

  •     Sheet 44:- Covers Glen Clova/Glen Doll/Glen Prosen Caches - also towards Edzell
  •     Sheet 54:- Kirriemuir/Glamis Area
  •     Sheet 43 - Glenshee  and Sheet 53 Perth/Dunkeld may also be handy ( Is there any cacher that doesn't own sheet 53??)

Explorer series:-

  •    Sheet 388 is most useful - Glen Clova/Glen Doll/Glen Prosen
  •    Sheet 381 was also used when setting caches - Kirriemuir/Glamis area
  •    Sheets 389 (Edzell), 387 (Glenshee) and 379(Dunkeld) also have caches dotted amongst them

 CACHES

Several caches have been placed in time for the event and a bookmark list has been created for other caches nearby/close to still unpublished caches/and along major routes to the event. Bookmark can be found at Gathering in the Glens - Current Caches.
