Geocache Description:

Introductory Series on Geocaching

Small plastic container with suitable cammo.  Bring pen just in case.  Room for  small trades & TBs.

Already an expert geocacher?  If so, go directly to the cache, do not pass Go.  If not, read on.

So, you're interested in Geocaching?  Great, here's a chance to try out your new GPS receiver (GPSr) without traveling too far (if you just purchased your GPSr nearby).  This cache is a "small" size container (smaller than a "regular" which would be a large Tupperware container or an ammo box).  It's hidden near one of three outdoors supply stores all within a few tenths of  a mile of each other (isn't Marlton great!).  The object is to find the "cache" (in this case, a plastic Tupperware-like container) hidden in the brush nearby, using your GPSr to get you to GZ ("ground zero," or where the cache is hidden).

Program the latitude and longitude as a "waypoint" into your GPSr (see instructions or ask the salesman for help).  Set the GPSr to navigate.  Walk outside if you're still inside (you can't get good satellite reception indoors).  Follow the arrow.  But wait, the shortest distance is not always the easiest path.  Is there a pond in the way?  A big building?  Mud?  Decide which way around will be easiest.  Keep following the arrow on your GPSr and watch the distance go down as you get closer and closer.  Once it gets to about zero, start looking around.  It's not out in the open, so you might have to do a little searching.  Make sure no one is watching you.  Some "stealth" may be required so that the "muggles" (non-geocachers) don't see what you're up to.  This is a relatively easy cache, so you should find it within a few minutes of searching; but if you can't, decrypt the hint below for some help.  But don't look at the hint unless you can't find it.  Remember that your GPSr is only accurate to within about 20 feet, so search within a 20' radius if necessary.

Once you find the cache, you can swap (optional) one of the goodies in it ("swag") for something you have on you of comparable value, and sign the log book (not optional).  If you haven't already, come up with a caching name (kind of like a screen name on AOL) and use that name to sign the log.  Leave a short note in the log book describing your experience also if you'd like.  Just remember that this is a family game and kids read these logs too.

When you're done, put everything back in the cache container, and make sure you close the cache container back up so it remains watertight.  Replace the container exactly where you found it (making sure it's not out in the open).

You might find something in the cache called a "travel bug" or a "geocoin."  These are not for keeps.  Instead, if you take one, you agree to place it in another cache as soon as possible.  Keep it moving.  Each travel bug and geocoin has a unique tracking number on it.  Make sure you record the tracking number.

When you get home, go online at www.geocaching.com and post your visit.  If you took a travel bug (TB) or geocoin, make sure you record that as well (click on the travel bug/geocoin item on the top right of the cache page and follow the instructions).  If you made a trade, record what you swapped.  Describe your experience if you like.  If you took nothing and left nothing, you can record "TNLNSL" (took nothing, left nothing, signed log).

That's all there is to it.  Now get online and search for some more caches in your area.  Try some multi's (a multi-stage cache, where at each stage you'll find the coordinates to the next stage, until you reach the final).  Or a micro (a very small cache container, about the size of a film can or magnetic key holder, or smaller, that's only big enough for a log book and no pen, so bring your own).  Or a puzzle cache (you have to solve a puzzle before you get the coordinates to the actual cache).  There are many other variants, so give them all a try.
