This cache has been archived.

twood80: Thanks again to everyone who helped out. Some of the summary data from LBB as a whole includes the following interesting tidbits:
-20,962 pounds (10.5 tons) of junk were picked up from 5400 acres by 3334 volunteers
-That poundage breaks down into 16020 pounds of trash, 200 pounds of recyclables (that's a lot of empty cans and bottle!), 800 pounds of tires, 200 pounds of metal, 800 pounds of post-event collections (those things too heavy or dangerous for us to move that we're supposed to report in), 2192 pounds of Hwy 52 debris, 250 pounds of appliances, and 500 pounds by Park&Rec.
-Volunteers range in age from <10 to >70
-The average time spent collecting is 1.5-2 hours
-The most commonly found items were plastic bottles, plastic bags, aluminum cans, fast food packaging and cigarette butts
-48.8% of those who collected in the same area multiple years found less litter this year
-They've been tracking the weather:
YEAR TEMPERATURE RANGE (F) PRECIPITATION
2007 44°-81° None
2008 45°-73° 1 day of rain
2009 52°-75° None
2010 40°-80° Trace of rain on 3 days
2011 32°-51° Rain, snow and fog 9 out of 12 days
-General information: Research has shown that 55% of all littering is done intentionally by people who drop or discard products. Experts estimate that 80% of all littering is done by males. Food and beverage packaging constitutes 51% of roadside litter.

If anyone wants a copy of the wrap up press release or event summary PDF's from the organizer, let me know and I can forward them to you.

From 2007-2011, LBB volunteers have removed a total of 64.2 tons of junk from Rochester! Hope to see you again next year, and that there's less trash to pick up because people are more conscientious about not leaving it around in the first place. LBB 2012 dates are April 21-28th.

Geocache Description:

Welcome to the third edition of CITO + Rochester's LBB.

Earth Day is April 22nd, and Rochester's Litter Bit Better campaign is the week of April 16-23, it's a good excuse to remind all of us to do some CITO. Plus partnering with LBB means they provide all bags, provide pick up, and disposal.

The area we will be cleaning up is outlined on the map in the gallery, Zumbro West Park, #422. This CITO event begins at 6:30 pm; bring your own gloves and beverage. Please also bring waterproof boots or waders if you own them, there's shore line that'll need cleaning. Through LBB, we'll provide the bags (separate ones for trash and recyclables), and arrange for pick-up and disposal of all the trash that you bring back to the parking area.

The log will be present, along with the waivers LBB requires, at the table near parking from 6:30 - 7 pm; you must sign the log and waivers during this time to earn your smiley. Anyone under the age of 18 needs to have an adult present to sign for them as well. At 8:15 we'll regroup at the table to tell stories about the strangest things we found while doing CITO, brag about how much trash you managed to grab, etc. Note the coordinates of any trash that's too big or hazardous and bring those to the regroup at 8:15, we can report them for the City to remove. This shouldn't be any where near as big an undertaking as last year's event!

There are several caches nearby this area, those along the trail if you arrive early, or a couple of new caches (which will be made permanent after the event) in the area for finding during the event.

6:30-7 pm Sign the log and waivers, pick up the list of new caches, start CITO. Bring your own gloves.
7-8:15 pm CITO
8:15-8:30 pm Regroup to drop off the trash and recycling, brag, and tell stories.
8:30 pm We're done! Head home with a feeling of accomplishment, and some smilies.

Please log a will attend with an approximate head count so I know how many bags to obtain from LBB.

If you can't make this event, or if you just need more service hours and want to do both, there's another CITO/LBB event on Saturday at Quarry Hill.
