This cache was placed atop Mastodon Mt. It is another one of my abandoned lookout caches providing a good hike, bike, or ATV ride to the middle of nowhere for some really neat views.
To get to this cache you will need to start at Big Creek on the St. Joe river. A vehicle with good ground clearance will be needed for this one. Imagine that! From Big Creek you will need to follow Mud Cabin Rd. You will know that you are on the right road when you reach N47 16.580 W116 06.034. I always liked the view of the valley from here. Follow this road until you reach the intersection of the FSR 1907. Take the uphill, or Cemetary Ridge road. After following this road for a spell you will come to N47 21.426 W116 00.351. This is another great view point. From here you need to follow the ATV trail leaving the parking spot. Your method of travel is up to you. It does get very steep in places and rocky too. It will be almost a 3 mile trip by trail one way. The cache is not located on the peak itself in order to hopefully keep it from being plundered. The cache contains a few odds and ends but nothing special. The mouse trap was never used but should give you a hint as to how my week long camping trip went! LOL.
