*** CACHE IS NOT
AT THE LISTED COORDINATES ***
The recent demise of
Thaddeus Vincenty cache left a void amongst navigational puzzle
connoisseurs. Here's a replacement to fill the gap, with a few
minor changes from the original.
To locate the cache container, begin your journey at the listed
coordinates and walk due north for exactly seventy nautical miles.
Now turn east and continue for another seventy nautical miles, then
head south for an additional seventy nautical miles. Finally,
travel west another seventy nautical miles.
You might be surprised to learn that you have not arrived back
at your starting point. Were Thaddeus Vincenty still around, he
would explain that your 280-mile journey had not been on a plane,
but on the curved surface of the earth (you had, in fact, travelled
a great circle route on the WGS84 spheroid). To the great good
fortune of geocachers everywhere, Vincenty developed an extremely
accurate method to calculate such variances, which came to be known
as Vincenty's Direct Method, and which is used by most modern GPS
recievers when projecting waypoints. If you happen to have an older
receiver, simply employ one of the many software solutions or
online calculators.
Once you've determined the correct coordinates, you'll be
looking for a silver micro container holding a logscroll. Although
the cache resides in Tennessee, you'll probably have to travel to
Mississippi to reach the cache site. Bring your own pen to sign the
log. Enjoy the journey!
