Geocache Description:

A quick look at the Ordnance Survey map will soon show that these stone circles stand in a busy prehistoric landscape containing many features. Near to the Grey Wethers is evidence of an oval enclosure measuring 40 x 48m which is surrounded by a 0.6m stony bank. Although the bank has been damaged where stones have been robbed there are what is thought to be two original entrances. This has lead to the suggestion that that the feature is in fact a henge. A smaller example can be seen nearby although it is half the dimensions of the first one and is in better condition.

This is a place Mark found on one of his famous all-dayers.. needless to say he was out and about without myself and the kids but most definately with his loyal furball, Zacha. But we have been back with the kids when parked in the nearby Fernworthy Reservoir.

Parking is recommended at the end of the road which takes you into Fernworthy Forest (British Grid approx 65900, 83800. Opposite the car parking there is a gate which follows the National Trail route through the forest, follow this until you reach a gate taking you out onto the moors. After the gate turn left and head SW. There is a rough path through the moors but please be mindful of boggy ground and featherbeds. You will see the Grey Wethers as you head uphill. Go through a gate which can take you either up to Sittaford Tor or to the Grey Wethers. The cache site is very near by!

Please note that when looking at the OS map there does appear to be a quicker route to the cache following old trails through the forest. We have tested a few of these out and they are not accurate enought to rely on!!! Please use the National Trail (green dashed line) on the OS map to get to the cache (when parking at the end of the road into Fernworthy). Its quicker and takes you straight to the site.

Happy caching!!
