Geocache Description:

Located in Utica, New York, terrain and difficulty are both one because the cache is actually accessible by road, and even if you walk or ski (which is the fun way to arrive) it is still only a one or one and a half difficulty level. Elevation is 819 ft.Just an update note: We have learned that the roads up to the eagle are not plowed in winter, the only access is to ski or snowshoe.

To Drive, take the Memorial Parkway to Valley View Road, then onto Steele HIll Road until you turn onto Master Gardens Road which lead you to Cemetary Road and the cache.

To walk or ski, take the Memorial Parkway to the Valley View Public Golf Course, and park your car there. Then head out for your walk (ski) uphill.

We first "discovered" this cache when taken there by friends on a cross country ski outing to "walk the dog, and wear off some dinner time calories". Being from the country, we were surprised at the great skiing and hiking areas available so close to the city of Utica. Then they took us to the cache---Wow! The view over looks Utica and is good, but a much more impressive one is just to the east in the next clearing. The cache, itself, sits across from Forest Hill Cemetary and honors one of Utica's own. The story is nostalgic and can give you shivers of pride. Also, included in the deal are a USGS benchmark and a "throne" from which to take a picture of you and your GPS to confirm your visit.

To confirm your visit, send an email to the cache creators answering the following questions or a picture of your GPS (or you and your GPS) on the "throne".

1. Who is the person honored at this cache?
2. What did he want?
3. What does July 4 mean to the honored person and the eagle?
4. What unique method of transportation to this spot is located to the left of the "cache" as you face the skyline view?
