Geocache Description:

LSP permit #30

This is an epic and long multicache in beautiful Letchworth State Park. This cache is not for everyone! But if you like adventure, long hikes in the woods, and spectacular scenery, then I believe you will love this cache.

For those not from around here, Letchworth State Park, renowned as the "Grand Canyon of the East," is one of the most scenically magnificent areas in the eastern U.S. The Genesee River roars through the gorge over three major waterfalls between cliffs--as high as 600 feet in some places--surrounded by lush forests. Hikers can choose among 66 miles of hiking trails. Trails are also available for horseback riding, biking, snowmobiling and cross-country skiing. Letchworth offers nature, history and performing arts programs, guided walks and tours, a summer lecture series, whitewater rafting, kayaking, hot air ballooning and a pool for swimming. Winter activities include ice skating, snow tubing, cross-country skiing, snowmobiling and horse-drawn sleigh rides.

Now, onto to the serious stuff. WARNING!!!!! This cache is potentially hazardous to your health. If you have a medical condition which precludes vigorous or extended activity, or other health problems which make hiking in uneven terrain unsafe, please, DO NOT attempt this cache. If you are unsure, please see your doctor first to ensure that you can safely cover the mileage of this cache. Please, also be aware of the inherent risks of trail hiking in deep woods. If you choose to go at this alone, let someone know where you are going, and approximately when you expect to be back. Bring a cell phone and make sure it’s charged! Bring supplies (most notably water, but sunscreen, food, etc) with you. Better still, do all of the above, but do this cache with a buddy or small group! Think safety first!!

Now that that’s done, onto the cache details. This is a multicache traversing a significant distance of the trail system of Letchworth Park. The course was chosen to highlight some of the more exquisite features of the park, and to avoid, as much as possible, the paved road system. The trails are clearly marked by yellow color on many trees. Bring a map of the park with you!! This will be invaluable to not getting lost and going miles out of the way! There will be absolutely no reason whatsoever to leave the trail/gravel road/paved road you are on for any distance except within 50-100 feet in the vicinity of a cache. The route and cache placement has been planned so that every cache can be reached optimally by staying on a marked trail. It is potentially dangerous to leave the trails and take what appears to be a more direct route to the next leg. DON’T DO IT! STAY ON THE TRAILS! Each leg of the cache will detail which trails you will be on for the next leg so as to avoid confusion. While it is easy to follow on the map, it can be confusing on the trails without knowing which to follow. Again, you will only leave the trail to get a cache!

The legs are matchstick containers, and the final is a regular size ammo can. To claim this cache as a find, you must sign each leg’s logbook on the same date. I will not delete any logs nor double check that you actually completed it in one day - it's the honor system. This cache is meant to be done in succession as one hike. Also, it would be prudent to have 2 cars, so that you have a vehicle available at the final leg. I would gather that you do not want to walk back to the start point to get to your car. This cache is being rated a 4 for terrain, and a 4 difficulty due to the extreme distance traveled, as well as the difficulty in long distance trail hiking. The cache hides will be fairly straightforward, but not super simple. If people’s logs seem to indicate these ratings are off, I will certainly change them as needed. Please take care to be stealthy for legs 1 and 2, as there is a muggle risk by these two legs. The overall mileage of this cache has been intentionally omitted to enhance the challenge of this adventurous cache. Good luck, and I look forward to reading about your experiences in the logs!

FTF has a spiffy new pedometer waiting for them.

Congratulations to Paleoman52 for braving this first and picking up the FTF!!! Great job!
