I have attended World Series games, as well as NBA and NFL
playoffs, and I have never heard anything as loud as the sound the
runners hear when they pass Wellesley College on Marathon Monday.
We are talking VOLUME!
It’s very exciting for any runner, but female runners get the
loudest cheers. This has been true ever since Kathy Switzer and
Roberta Gibb, the two pioneering women who first broke the gender
barrier at Boston. (Switzer did it unofficially—albeit with an
actual registered number—, and Gibb officially. Today, thousands of
women run this and countless other marathons all over the world.
This cache, located in the woods next to Wellesley College, is
dedicated to these women and to the “world’s most appreciative
marathon fans,” the women of Wellesley. You'll probably see a few
female runners enjoying the paths in this beautiful little woods.
Park at N 42 17.634, W071 19.273. Be very careful crossing the
street. DON’T PARK ON POND STREET! Not even in the places where it
looks like you’re allowed to. You’re not.
Stage 1 is small plastic camouflaged bottle. Stage 2 is in its
third iteration. Someone ate the first two, so this one is intended
to be slightly less palatable. Some bushwhacking is required, but
you don't need to actually whack anything! The final is a
waterproof container, also painted with camo.
