Geocache Description:

"Organ Saint: By definition a person so enamoured of the harsh beauty of the Organs that, far from minding the length of the approaches and the hostility of the terrain, he actually lies down with the cholla and blesses the rattlesnakes."
-Dick Ingraham

This cache is part of a series dedicated to those Organ Saints. Each cache displays some quality which typifies an Organ Saint. By finding all caches of the series and recording the codes found in each one, you will be able to unlock the location of the final and join the ranks of the saintly.

With the close proximity of a relatively large city, Las Cruces, it is sometimes easy to forget that a trip into the Organ Mountains is an all-day endeavor. The lengthy approaches, mysterious route descriptions and sheer difficulty of getting into these mountains has left more than one party out after dark. Bringing a headlamp is always advised, but even beyond that, anyone serious about climbing in these mountains should be prepared to make an emergency bivy. There are accounts of emergency bivouacs being made on the sheer cliffs of the Spire and the Wedge. There are also countless other small bivuac spots throughout the range. Some of these are not much more than crude rock walls constructed to shelter one from the oppressive winds. There are also quite a few nice caves and shelters that are worth staying the night in even if you aren't stuck out here beyond your allotted time.

THE CACHE
This cache is placed in a spot that I consider to be a prime bivouac location. It is a little bit off the ridge, a few hundered feet down from the saddle just south of the Wedge. Being on the east side of the ridge, it gets a little bit more moisture, enough to support a beautiful slope of mountain maples, scrub oak and even some tall douglas firs. Whether you stop by here on your way up to the Wedge, or as a diversion on your way to some of the harder to access Squaretop climbs, you'll be glad to know of this nice little spot where you can take shelter. Since the cache can be found along many different routes, I'm not posting one specific route as the "best" way to get here. However, if you are planning on heading up this way and want some route beta, feel free to contact me via email and I'll try to help you out. The cache is hidden in the small overhang shelter, behind some rocks. Since GPS reception is a bit spotty, I've also included a picture of the bivy spot.

I felt it appropriate to include an emergency "space-blanket" in the cache, along with some other nice goodies. Please leave the space blanket in the cache unless you find yourself in need of it.
