Welcome to Woodland's Marble Town
A "Marble Town" is another name for a cemetery. This is a piece of local history that the "residents" paid a lot of money for people to see. Being that this is a sensitive area there are some ground rules:
1.) Above all be respectful of the area you are in!
2.) Follow all geocaching rules as per the guidelines.
3.) This cache is NOT placed in a way that requires tearing anything apart.
4.) This cache is available from dawn to dusk only!
Woodland is part of Stamford's South End Historic District, which dates itself back to 1860. According to local historian and preservationist Renee Kahn, "It's a who's who of 19th century Stamford," bearing names such as Weed, Scofield, Lockwood, and Davenport; some of the best-regarded Protestant families in Stamford. More than 16,000 people rest here, in one of the nation's first "rural park" cemeteries. Many of the wealthier and more prominent residents of the city are buried at the high points, which overlook the water. Keep this in mind as you tour the grounds and note various themes of Gothic and Victorian influence.
Also many thanks to billvp913 for the laying down the foundation of this series in upstate NY.
