THE CACHE IS NOW CLOSED, probably until the last week of March 26. Occasionally the staff may open on weekends in fine weather, check the NT website for details. Opening hours can be variable but are basically 1030 to 1630. This cache is in a very exposed clifftop location and offers some mind-blowing views of the west Wight, plus the opportunity to soak up a little history. There’s a very good tearoom, opening at 10:30, within the fort and a gentle downhill stroll back to the car. If you're energetic turn onto the minor road at the High Down Inn, use the free car park at N50 40.152 W001 32.514, and you’ve a two-mile return walk along the clifftops. For the closest car park, try N50 40.013 W001 33.946, but it costs a fiver and can be crowded in high summer. Sometimes the cafe may be open but not the other rooms in the fort. I can't be more specific but a quick visit to the National Trust (nationaltrust.org.uk) website can be helpful. Bear in mind that extreme weather, particularly very high winds, can close the place without notice, although this is rare. IMPORTANT: This is NOT a commercial cache but your destination is within a National Trust property and there is an admission charge for non-members of about £8:50, or a family rate of about £22. Don’t be put off .... it’s worth every penny! Our thanks go to the National Trust for permission to site the cache, but please remember they are not responsible for its maintenance. If you have a problem, log your visit as normal.
