Geocache Description:

This cache involves a fairly easy descent into a cave. The cave is in pitch dark and light is required. To get there demands an off road drive over some sand which is not demanding.

First safety. Dahls are subterranean caverns often extremely large. Access to them is through a collapsed roof. Often these are nothing more than a narrow crack descending perhaps a hundred feet. Some are marked with concrete bollards but most are not. The animal bones in many of the dahls provide ample of warning of what can happen to the unwary. The cache is in a massive dahl. The lower chamber, containing the cache, is pitch black and everyone will need a torch. Why not carry a spare just in case. The scramble up and down is not difficult but, given the environment, consider a hand rope if taking people of less experience. We always use one, a 100m rope is about the right length.

The following extract is taken from the log of Scarinian: At last I had found an entrance to the Mines of Deadlyiron. I had been seeking such an entrance for a long time and now I had located one. Whatismore this was a base of the Scorlaps who had taken to subterranean forts on realising that baggers were virtually powerless when their GPS were denied access to the heavens. I descended down into the cave and when I reached the point where daylight no longer reached I lit a lamp. On my left, silhouetted against the dark, I could see the Scorlaps in a large chamber dining. I sneaked past them and half right I could see the way down to another level from where I could hear miners working the rock face. I descended further down the pit. I reached the bottom level and ahead of me I could see a large mound above which was an internal domed roof. I headed further into the cave up the mound until I could go no higher and facing towards the back of the cave I looked half left and could see a small passage, large enough for a man to crawl through comfortably. I went over to the entrance and reaching through on the left hand side I placed the Sacred Container of Riyadh. Recalling the wise words of the Old Widow Hag from Kingdom who had said “This is not the place for baggers to spend hours toiling so place the cache sympathetically” I did not hide the container but part of the rock side concealed it from view until the seeker made their way to the passage entrance. With the container safely secreted I drew the Enchanted Sword of Scalim and prepared for a fight. The bones of Camelodia warriors gleamed white in my lamp light testament to the brutal nature of the Scorlapian soldiers above. All about me the walls and roof sparkled with crystal gems and the rock sides rang as if of metal. This was indeed a fabulous place….

M&M Notes:

The aim of this cache is to get there and not to have people groping around for ages. It is therefore very easily found once in the correct location. When replacing the container bear this in mind while being conscious that this is a very popular dahl and we don’t want the cache to be found by heathen non-seekers.

Our intention was to make this a double cache á la Saudi Sauna. However, on the floor of the second chamber used to be a jar that had been there for over ten years containing paper on which visitors signed their name. It has gone. We used the container and the notebook planned for the upper cache to replace the jar and notebook. This should not present a problem in securing the bag, we have taken many people into the cave of all age groups and everyone reaching the upper chamber has wanted to go on down to the lower one.

As mentioned dahls are subterranean caverns with a collapsed roof. Where the collapse has left a large hole it traps the fertile soil blowing across the desert enabling palms and other plants to grow. This vegetation is home to abundant wild life. In particular eagle owls make these their roost so be prepared for these magnificent birds to fly out. Desert foxes also use these dahls and many can be seen in the area.
