This is a historical spring location that is still in use and
still supplies much of the water for the city of Allentown.
Schantz's Spring, purchased by the city for $14,000 in 1898, had
already been providing water to the city for 40 years.
The spring produces 6 million to 8 million gallons of water a
day in an average year.
Schantz's Spring takes its name from Jacob Schantz, who acquired
the property in 1792. In 1888, David Koch purchased the
spring. In 1894 he leased it to his son, who ran it for four years
until the spring was sold to the city.
At some point in the spring's history it was capped,
transitioning it from a reservoir style spring to an underground
spring.
This picture is the spring before it was capped. The barn in the
background is still standing today.
