Geocache Description:

This should make you think twice about where you build.

In the early part of the last century searching for oil in southern Alberta was a popular pastime. Companies were started and stocks sold galore. Turner Valley for a time was the largest producer in the British Empire. With smaller wells scattered throughout southern Alberta and northern Montana the Huff Refinery was set up and running in the 1930s.

By 1960 the hope for a big oil find in southern Alberta had vanished and Safeway was preparing to build this 2 million dollar shopping Centre. A few years later the media began to question whether the polluted land might be causing health problems for those who now live in the area. The concerns died down but maybe people just forgot the history.
