Geocache Description:

A quick cache and dash in Middle Run Park.

I’ve noticed a bunch of "big holes" popping up in the Wilmington caching community. So I thought I’d offer my version…

I spotted this hole 2 years ago when I did Mike Ott’s offset “Importe du Puzzle de Quebec” cache. There was no fallen tree to create the hole, and no sign of a drainage hole at the bottom. What a strange anomaly! And there are no limestone formations in this area to cause natural sink holes, so it was a real puzzle!

Fast-forward 2 years, and now you can see the drain hole at the bottom... It is all caused by erosion - mystery solved! But it’s still a darned big hole, and it’s all done by Mother Nature!

Cache and parking are located just off Fox Den Road. Parking is free, and the area was recently filled with gravel, so it is now safe for all vehicle types. It is a quick 0.2 mile hike in. Hike across the field, pick up a deer trail, and you are there.

Container is a 3”x5”x5” lock-on-lock container painted in camo colors. My Secret Santa gave this to me at last year’s caching Christmas party, and I’m glad to finally put it to use! Lots of swag, so bring a trade item or a TB.

This area is part of Middle Run Park, so it is owned by New Castle County. You can access the area from the Pike Creek Church, from the Middle Run Park parking area near Tri-State Bird Rescue, or from Fox Den Road.

Normally, no hunting is allowed in this area. There are typically between 2 and 4 controlled hunts held in the Middle Run area every year, depending on the deer population and number of car accidents they cause. The meat from these hunts is donated to homeless and low-income charities.

The area is closed to the public during these hunts. Signs showing the hunt dates are posted 3 to 4 weeks before the hunts are held. One of these signs is in the parking area. With the exception of these few days, no other hunting is allowed.

Therefore, you normally do NOT have to:
- wear orange clothing
- fret over seeing people walking around with guns
- worry about getting shot
- wait until Sunday to go after this cache

You will find several other caches nearby, including “Electonic Odds ‘n Ends”, “More Zeros… Almost” and “Academy Kids Cache”. So check the map for other caches you might want to pick up before you head out for this one.

Cache has thorns, vines, slippery, crumbling and uneven ground nearby. Terrain will be a 3 during the summer, but a 2 in the winter.

Of course, please rehide the cache where you found it – don’t make this easier for the next cacher!
