Sheppard Point Trail Head Cache Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

VET_TREESLAMMER: First let me say that I am very sorry [:I] to those of you who took the time and made an effort to find this MIA cache. I have neglected to check this website for a long time now and I appologize for that. [:(]
Although I am very grateful to the fellow cachers who moved the cache out of the poison ivy, I really wish they had left the coordinates of the new location. I was planning on posting the pictures from the camera that was inside the cache. I obviously didn't mean to put the cache in a poison ivy patch. [:P] There wasn't any undergrowth when I first placed the cache but now almost the entire hilltop is covered. [xx(]
I will be temporarily archiving this cache until I can find the old one or place a new one in the same area. I have recently been out to look for the cache with no luck. Please check this page every now and then if you are interested in going back to this area. My full intentions are to get this cache up and running again as soon as possible. In the meantime HAPPY CACHING!! [:D]

Geocache Description:

This cache is located in Trail of Tears State Park on the Sheppard Point Trail Head near Cape Girardeau, MO. Very nice trail of solid footing. The trail was nice and clear of undergrowth. There was about 150ft. or so in elevation change in the 1/2 to 3/4 of a mile distance to the cache.

Welcome to the first cache that we have hidden. If you love hiking, camping and fishing Trail of Tears State Park is a great ploace to visit. The cache is located on the Sheppard Point Trail Head inside the park. The easiest directions would be to take I-55 to the Fruitland/Jackson exit at highway 61. Take hwy 61 North about a mile to the hwy 177 intersection(stoplight) and turn right. Drive about 8 miles on 177 to the first stop sign. Turn right and continue on 177 for approx. 2-3 miles to the second Trail of Tears State Park entrance. This rd. is named Moccasin Springs. You will see a visitors center on the left as you continue down Moccasin Springs. Stop and get some info/maps on the park if you like. There are lots of things to do here including many trails to hike, a good size lake for fishing and sunbathing on the beach, 2 campgrounds, beautiful overlooks of the Mississippi as well as access to the Mississippi river. Continue on Moccassin Springs rd. until you see a sign on the right for Sheppard Point Trail Head. Park here.
This is a very nice trail that is 2 miles total in length although the cache is aprox. 1/2 to 3/4 of a mile from the parking area. You must walk up hill nearly the entire length to the cache. This hill is pretty steep in areas although a good mountain biker may be able to make it without stopping. When you get to the top of the hill turn left. This should get you close enough. Turning right will get you there but it is by far the long way as the trail makes a loop and ends up back at the top of the hill. Use the hint below for more info.
There is a log book, a pencil, a pen, a form explaining what this container is doing out here from geocaching.com, a disposable camera to take your picture with, and various other trinkets/goodies. As always please leave something if you take something. Please feel free to add any hints or tips to your log as I am fairly new to this and trying to learn the best manner in which to place a successful cache. I think maybe the cache might be a little too easy to find especially in the late fall through spring. Let me know if you think I need to hide it better. Oh, I did have poor GPS coverage for about a minute or so at the bottom of the hill just after leaving the parking area. Don't worry you will have good coverage well before the top of the hill where you turn left.
Thank you and happy hunting!
VET_TREESLAMMER & Rhi

P.S. The hint is a very descriptive one so maybe just print it out and take it with you without looking at it first. P.S.S. There is now a disposable camera in the cache. Please take a picture of yourselves. Please log your visit and let me know when the camera is full so that i can post the pictures on this page. Thank you!
