Geocache Description:

>

“It is strange how little has been written about the Upper
Mississippi. The river below St. Louis has been described time and
again, and it is the least interesting part. … Along the Upper
Mississippi every hour brings something new. There are crowds of
odd islands, bluffs, prairies, hills, woods and villages—everything
one could desire to amuse the children. Few people ever think of
going there, however … as we form our opinions of our country from
what other people say of us, of course we ignore the finest part of
the Mississippi.”

-- Mark Twain, 1886.

Those who choose to fish along the Great River Road on the
Mississippi can find an abundance of barges, boat rentals, and
public fishing piers where it is possible to fish the big river. If
you choose to, you can ease your kayak into butter-smooth water
cloaked in the morning mist. Notice the sun peeks over craggy
limestone bluffs rising above you. Notice too, the birds begin the
cacophony of morning song, greeting another stunner of a day on the
Upper Mississippi River National Wildlife & Fish Refuge.

Though driving the Great River Road is a fine way to see the Upper
Mississippi, exploring under your own power the river in a kayak or
canoe, provides perhaps the truest estimation of the wonders of the
river.
