The Strawberry Plant has faded from local memory, here's your chance for a visit to a hidden gem on Bainbridge Island.
On January 9, 1997, a large commercial building and pier located at this site on Eagle Harbor on Bainbridge Island was totally destroyed by fire. The very large building was built partially over the water and originally housed a strawberry processing plant, owned and operated by first and second generation Japanese in the 1930s and early 1940s. At the onset of World War II, the owners and workers were interned and ownership changed hands over the decades and housed various tennants.
Until it's demise in 1997, the property had been known as the Strawberry Plant.
The property has recently been purchased on behalf of Bainbridge Island Parks and Recreation Department for use as a waterfront park. Use by the public is OK. However, the most-recent owner posted no-tresspassing signs and the park has not removed what's left of them. The City appears to be using the property for temporary gravel storage...have fun. Keep your head down and enjoy the view all on your own! Access by shalllow draft water craft would work fine too.
