Fort Ord Dunes State Park is located on four miles of Monterey Bay
shoreline. The area is open and relatively undeveloped, but has a
military history as a small arms training ground. Over 100
abandoned buildings and military remnants are scattered throughout
the African ice plant-covered dunes.
Because the park has not yet officially opened, access is
limited. The black plastic-covered sign located at this secret
trailhead entry indicates that the main entrance to the park will
be located to the north. However, that entrance is currently fenced
off and closed. In the meantime, entry and parking are available
here on the corner of 1st Avenue and 1st Street: the secret
trailhead.
The container is a clear plastic Lock & Lock cylinder filled
with small trade items and a log. Please bring your own pen to sign
the log.
UPDATE: In March 2009, the park officially opened. Hours are
8:00 to a half hour after sunset daily. Admission is free.
