Geocache Description:

Please come join the GGA at Callaway Gardens to welcome the new year - hosted by the Chattahoochee Valley Cachers..

Callaway Gardens is graciously opening their gates with free admission the months of January and February. This gives us a wonderful opportunity to hold the January meeting at this beautiful location. What a great way to kick off the New Year! As a "Thank You" to Callaway Gardens for offering the use of their facilities, the Chattahoochee Valley Cachers will set up an information table to answer questions about geocaching to both new cachers and the public between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Please consider volunteering 30 minutes of your time to assist at the information table.

The Chattahoochee Valley Cachers will also host a chili lunch from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. in the meeting room at the Discovery Center.

The GGA meeting will be held in the large classroom at the Virginia Hand Discovery Center, posted coordinates, from 2:00 until 4:00. Plan to come early so you can enjoy the day discovering all the activities around the garden. Some activities for the day are:

Lunch 1:00PM: CHILI (donation can will be available)

Meeting 2:00PM Owl1959 and the Puzzler from the waysiders will be showing us some of the tricks to creating and solving puzzle caches. The puzzles these 2 create and solve are legendary. Thanks in advance guys!

Geocaching: There are more than 25 geocaches hidden throughout Callaway Gardens.

Virginia Hand Discovery Center:

A staffed information desk provides you with an overview of all there is to see and do in the Callaway Gardens' 13,000 acres. Also houses an education wing, lecture hall, exhibit hall, the Discovery Gift Shop, and Discovery Café. Visit the transportation court if you would like to rent a bike if you would like to ride around the gardens.

Birds of Prey shows are in the Discovery Ampitheater near the Virginia Hand Callaway Discovery Center.

The CVC has come up with a game to play this year, it is like a mini-challenge guantlet: and it works like this:

We have placed a series of caches along a route within Callaway Gardens.Teams will gather at 10:00 AM at the Bike rental outside the Discovery Center and will be given the necessary information and coordinates before starting. Departure times will be approximately every 10 minutes. From the starting point, teams will hike to the endpoint. Along the way, there will be a list of "Targets" to find to earn bonus points. These will be scavenger hunt type items. Some are existing features and some will be planted just for the event.

Points will be calculated as follows. First of all, it's golf style scoring - the lower the score the better. The number of minutes it takes to complete the Dash will be your Base Score. To that will be added Penalty Points for any caches DNF'd. From that total, we will subtract the Bonus Points. The lowest score wins! Teams should have 4 to 6 people.

Additional teams will be put together from individuals wishing to participate.

What to Bring - Each team will need a GPS and a Digital Camera.Walking/poking sticks will be a big help. Water is probably a good idea too. Trail Conditions - The trail is mixed bike path and walking trail. There will be very little bushwhacking involved. Time/Distance - The total distance will be approximately 4 miles unless you get lost. Then it's anybody's guess.

Weather - Plan to go rain or shine, cold or colder. It is January after all. Besides, weather should be viewed as part of the adventure. Prizes - We are assembling a selection of prizes. We'll figure out the details by the time they're needed. There might just be a trophy involved too. When posting your "Will Attend" log, please indicate whether you will beparticipating in the Cache Dash. If you've already formed a team, each Team Captain should send a separate email to dash@cvcachers.org with your Team Name and the TeamMembers.

We hope you will join us for a fun filled day of caching, hiking, fishing, sightseeing or just relaxing!

Happy New Year to all!
