Survivor II - North Manitou Island Event Cache

This cache has been archived.

The Conman: It's (way past) time for this listing to be archived. I had such a good time with many memories that I hate to archive it.

Stay tuned for next years Survivor event. We're already talking and doing some planning and brainstorming for ideas and places to visit!

Thanks to everyone who attended - it was certainly a great event.

Geocache Description:

What
For the second year for our Survivor Event - we are re-visiting North Manitou Island.

Now here is a camping trip! 15,000 acres of wilderness with a visitor use concept that emphasizes solitude, self-reliance and a sense of exploration. Camping on North Manitou is "open": you choose the campsite! The primary visitor activities include hiking, swimming, backcountry camping and backpacking. The island itself is home to a large whitetail deer herd and is the summer range for a variety of raptors (including the Bald Eagle). In the fall, special trips are available for hunters.

When
The scheduled date will be June 21 2009 - 9am in front of the ranger station. You'll find us at the nearest picnic table. As mentioned - the official event date is June 21st. However, we highly recommend you show up at least a few days early and enjoy Michigan's great outdoors!

Join us for this annual unique opportunity of a 5/5 event. In order for you to join us - you must either have your own personal watercraft (not allow to be docked for more than 20 minutes) or ferry over to the island the previous day.

Who
Everyone with a sense of adventure is invited to this exciting event.

Why
Those who are looking for an adventure will find it here on North Manitou Island. North Manitou Island is home to some of the most unique parts of the United States. Roughly 5% of the land mass in the U.S. is officially designated by Congress as a Wilderness Area. Of that 5% number - 3% is wilderness in Alaska. The remaining 2% is scattered thoughout the rest of the country. Be part of hikers and backpackers who have been on North Manitou Island.

How
Access to the island is by boat only. There is a ferry service that runs once per day that goes to both North and South Manitou Islands. It is run by Manitou Island Transit. Recommendation - book your tickets in advance otherwise there may not be room on the ferry.
