Geocache Description:

Cultural cache in the peaceful park of famous Grassalkovich palace. The palace has been recently reconstructed.

Both the history and present aspect of Gödöllõ were highly influenced by the presence of the royal palace. The 250-year-old Gödöllõ Royal Palace occupying 17.000 m2 ground and having also a 28 ha park connected has been resting place of many celebrities and great persons of the past centuries. Beloved Queen of Hungarians, Elizabeth (Sissy) spent 2000 nights here.
Between the two World Wars governor Horthy used the palace as summer residence. One-time prime ministers of Hungary -Count Pál Teleki and Count István Bethlen - often came here to hunt, too.
The palace if often called Grassalkovich-palace after its founder Antal Grassalkovich (1694-1771) bearing this name first in his family. He was a lawyer from a gentry's family, who got into the Court, where he became the Head of Hungarian Treasury in 1748. Later he became baron, then count, keeper of the crown and Master of the Horse. Several great constructions are related to his name: palaces in Pozsony and Pest-Buda, Gödöllõ and Hatvan, monastery in Máriabesnyõ, which was a family crypt such as the Capuchin Crypt in Vienna.
In the palace museum you can see the suites of Queen Elizabeth and King Francis Joseph and also a commemorative exhibition about Queen Elizabeth opened on 100. anniversary of her death.
The castle museum is opened as follows:
From 1 Apr. till 31 Oct. : 10.00 - 18.00
From 1 Nov. till 31 Mar. : 10.00 - 17.00
(on Mondays closed)
The cache is hidden in the Upper Park. The park can be approached from either the castle or the street (from 5:30 -18.00 daily).
You find the box at the foot of an old horse chestnut tree.

As the box was stolen several times I made two extra hides for just in case the cache is stolen again. You can find a smaller cache substitute at N 47° 35,521' E 19° 20,629', and an extra microcache at N 47° 35,546' E 19° 20,653'.
