A Freguesia
O topónimo de Vilar de Murteda deve-se à abundância de um arbusto aromático e espontâneo chamado “murta”,
sobretudo no lugar de Murteda, onde se situou a igreja primitiva. Em 1258 já a freguesia estava constituída,
como consta das Inquirições de D. Afonso III.
Tem como principais actividades económicas a agricultura e a pecuária. Nota-se, no entanto, o aparecimento
actual de actividades pertencentes a outros sectores.
Compreende os lugares do Ervideiro, Paço, Casal, Pereiro, Rodo e Corredouras. Ainda no que diz respeito à história da Freguesia,
no Inventário Colectivo dos Arquivos Paroquiais vol. II Norte Arquivos Nacionais/Torre do Tombo,
lê-se na integra: «Em 1258 na lista das igrejas situadas 110 território ao norte do rio Lima,
elaborada por ocasião das Inquirições de D. Afonso III, Vilar de Murteda aparece, sob a denominação
de "ecclesia de Mortedo", como uma das igrejas subordinadas ao bispado de Tui.
No catálogo das mesmas igrejas, de 1320, mandado elaborar, para pagamento de taxa, pelo rei D. Dinis,
São Miguel de Murteda foi taxada em 60 libras. Pertencia, ao tempo, à terra da Vinha. Em 1444,
D. João I conseguiu do papa que aquele território de entre Lima e Minho fosse desmembrado do bispado de Tui,
passando a pertencer ao de Ceuta, onde se manteve até 1512.
Neste ano, no tempo do arcebispo de Braga D. Diogo de Sousa, Vilar de Murteda foi anexada a esta diocese de Braga,
por troca com o bispo de Ceuta, pela comarca eclesiástica de Olivença. Esta permuta foi aprovada, em 1513, pelo papa Leão X.
Em 1546, no registo da avaliação dos benefícios eclesiásticos incorporados na diocese de Braga, São Miguel de Murteda foi avaliada em 15 mil réis.
Na cópia de 1580 do Ceusual de D. Frei Baltasar Limpo, sobre a situação canónica daqueles benefícios eclesiásticos,
São Miguel de Murteda era anexa perpétua de São Lourenço da Montaria.
Segundo Américo Costa, São Miguel de Vilar de Murteda foi abadia da apresentação da Mitra.»
