Galt Mine No.6 began producing in 1908 then abandoned in 1935.
The area was then fenced to keep people out. Good thing. In 1937 No. 6 shaft suddenly collapsed creating a 26 meter crater. This and others were filled and topped up but nevertheless about 1950 No. 5 shaft (an air vent) sank over 30 meters.
Don't forget tunnels remain under this area and sink holes have shown up over the years. Hence the sign. Sign the logbook but don't go exploring.
