Introduction
During our 10-days holiday on Corfu in August 2008 we successfully
found all twelve caches on this island. In addition our wayfaring
led us in fabulous places where no cache is placed. On three of
them we decided to create Earthcaches:
Pantokrator,
Pantokrator II and
Bella Vista to Paleokastritsa. We also highly recommend to
visit by boat
Lake Butrint and Vivari Channel which is not so far.
Enjoy this spectacular countryside!
Geomorphology
This Earthcache is placed at the most beautiful vista to the
north-west of the Corfu. This vista is rightly called “Balcony of
the Ionian Sea”. Corfu is one of the islands that are contained to
the Ionian zone. At this “Balcony” you can see the beauty of a
segmentation and ruggedness of geotectonic activities in this
area.
The Ionian zone exhibits three distinct stratigraphic sequences,
representing a pre-rift, a syn-rift, and a post-rift stage of
evolution of the Ionian realm, from a neritic platform environment
to a pelagic basin. Corfu is located near the Kefalonia geological
fault formation and as such earthquakes sometimes are felt. The
whole island, composed as it is of various limestones formations,
presents great diversity of surface, and the views from the more
elevated spots are magnificent.

Additional information
At Earthcache place you will enjoy a spectacular view to the city
Paleokastritsa and the Bay of Liapades. On the right peninsula (as
you can see from the vista point of view) there is a monastery
Panagia Theotokos.
Paleokastritsa is situated 16 miles north-west of Corfu's
attractive capital, Corfu Town. Paleokastritsa is one of the most
beautiful villages in Corfu. Paleokastritsa is chiefly memorable
for the exceptional scenery along with the superb beaches. You can
swim at six different secluded sand and fine pebble beach enclosed
by tall cliffs, wooded headlands, olive groves, lemon and cypress
trees and lush hilly countryside. Favourite walks are up to the
promontory farthest north to find the charming Theotokos monastery,
the 13th century Venetian Castrizza San Angelo, and to the hills
beyond. You can reach Aghios Georgios with its immense beach by
water-taxi. There are plenty of boat trips from Paleokastritsa
beach. Add variety to holidays in Paleokastritsa by visiting
Lakones and other hillside villages, where you will find quiet
traditional Corfu charm and memorable country taverns. Buses run to
Corfu Town for a change of atmosphere.
Paleokastritsa beach is famous for its clear water and striking
blue-green colours. In fact it is one of a string of six
spectacularly situated coves. Rocks provide great points for
diving. Snorkelling is another justly popular Paleokastritsa
holiday activity. Taverns and accommodation are scattered around
the resort, many in excellent locations. Paleokastritsa is not for
those seeking lots of lively nightlife but there are plenty of
taverns, bars and a couple of discos to keep you busy if you wish,
as Paleokastritsa has been a British favourite for years.

Approving the finding
To approve the finding of this Earthcache you need to:
1) As mentioned above this vista is called “Balcony of the Ionian
Sea”. Using profile e-mail me the names of all big seven Ionian
Islands.
2) From this seven Ionian Islands there are two that are not
contained in the geotectonic Ionian Zone at all. Using profile
e-mail me
a) the names of these two islands and
b) the name of the geotectonic zone that the more northern
island is contained in.
3) Geomorphology activities formed this area in many bays,
peninsulas and small islands. From the Bella Vista (Earthcache
coordinates) you can see some of them. Using profile e-mail me how
many distinct bays, peninsulas and small rock islands you see from
the Earthcache coordinates.
4) Using profile e-mail me the name of the paid appliance which is
in the middle and close to banister at the “Bella Vista to
Paleokastritsa” coordinates.
5) Upload in the log photo from the “Bella Vista to Paleokastritsa”
coordinates with you and the Bay of Liapades (see spoiler). Please
do not put the paid appliance in the photo.
Please feel free to log your finding and to send your answers for
approving questions at the same time. If your answer will be
incorrect we will contact you for its correction.
