CM IAT Series #35 Traditional Geocache
Wis Wild Weasel: Gonna have to archive this one. Tried to get there today to replace the log but the Deer Fly Trail was in worse shape than I thought it would be. Will try to replace this cache with a new one after the spring thaw.

CHIPPEWA MORAINE
ICE AGE TRAIL SERIES
(Plummer Lake to Deerfly Trail)
More than 12,000 years ago, an immense flow of glacial ice sculpted a landscape of remarkable beauty across Wisconsin. As the colossal glacier retreated, it left behind a variety of unique landscape features. These Ice Age remnants are now considered among the world's finest examples of how continental glaciation sculpts our planet.
The Ice Age National Scenic Trail is a thousand-mile footpath — entirely within Wisconsin — that highlights these Ice Age landscape features while providing access to some of the state's most beautiful natural areas. The Chippewa county portion of the IAT is referred to as the "Chippewa Moraine" segment.
The Chippewa Moraine’s prime glacial scenery, including 17 lakes, is something special. Here there’s an eye-pleasing symmetry to the pattern of rounded hilltops and reflecting lakes. After the glacier’s horizontal movement ceased, its surface debris flowed into low spots in the ice. Those accumulations of rock debris formed the hills, called hummocks, and depressions formed by large chunks of ice, thicker spots in the ice sheet, melted to become the kettle lakes.
This series leads cachers along the Ice Age trail south of Chippewa County Hwy M between 144th St and Deerfly Trail . There is parking by the well marked trail entrances on 144th St, 160th St, 167th St and Deerfly Trail. This series is probably best accomplished parking a vehicle at each end of a trail segment.

The placement of these caches was intended to be an incentive to visit this beautiful area. All of the caches in this series are within a short distance of the trail. None of the hides should present much of a problem to experienced geocachers. Some are, but most hides are NOT winter friendly. The difficulty and terrain ratings take the hills and distance into consideration.
PLEASE NOTE: There are some foot bridges on this section of the trail that become very slippery when wet or damp.

We suggest visiting the Ice Age Interpretive Center two miles east of Hwy 40 on Hwy M before starting your geocaching adventure. You will leave will a greater understanding and a higher appreciation for this beautiful and unique area you are about to hike.
