Geocache Description:

This cache was originally placed in 2013 as part of the Washington State Parks Centennial GeoTour - "100 caches in 100 parks to celebrate 100 years" - cosponsored by Washington State Geocaching Association (WSGA).

Flaming Geyser State Park is a 480-acre day-use park with more than three miles of freshwater shoreline on the Green River. The park's most unique features are its "geysers" (methane seeps). Park activities include whitewater rafting and model airplane flying.

Located near Black Diamond, the vast coal seams that run through the area provide the natural gas that formerly fueled the Flaming Geyser, which sadly, is no longer lit due to depletion of the methane source. If you head across the stream and up the stairs, you'll see Bubbling Geyser, which is still active. This opening to the gas seam is astride the stream itself, but you can see the bubbling and the effects of the methane on the soil surrounding it.

History: Flaming Geyser State Park has existed on this location since the 1920s. Operated as a private park into the 1960s, it fell into bankruptcy. State Parks rescued it from conversion to home development and has operated it as a park ever since.

Hours: The park is open year-round for day use, 8:00 a.m. to dusk.

To better assist those seeking the cache, follow the trail up the steps, around the curve to the left and look for social trails to the left. There are three and the hiding spot is reached by the middle trail. Cross the downed log and veer to the left slightly as you walk up to the tree and you will find the cache hiding in a nook and covered with leaves.
