Above Burdale Tunnel Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Argente: My appologies to any cachers confused by my temporary disabling of this listing. I had intended to archive it as we no longer live in the area and are unable to carry out regular maintenance. Unfortunately we have had to archive 3 caches in this area as they appear to have been intentionally damaged.

Geocache Description:

The cache is located on the Centenary Way (North Yorkshire), an 83 mile Long Distance Footpath from Filey Brigg to York Minster. The cache can be found as an individual cache or as part of a three cache mini series involving a 3 mile circular walk. The other two caches are:
GC25YTM - Centenary Way To Wharram Percy
GC25XEC - Wolds Way To Wharram Percy

The cache site is above Burdale Tunnel, a railway tunnel on the now abandoned Malton and Driffield Railway. The tunnel lies near the village of Burdale in North Yorkshire, between the former Burdale and Wharram railway stations, and was built to take the rail line through the hills of the Yorkshire Wolds. Construction began in 1847 with the sinking of seven vertical shafts, but the tunnel, which was 1,774 yards (1,622 m) in length, was not completed until 1853. The Malton and Driffield Railway has been closed since 1958, and the tunnel portals have been bricked up since 1961.

The recommended parking for the circular walk is the English Heritage car park for the Wharram Percy deserted medieval village, clearly signposted from the B1248.

The suggested route for the walk is to turn right out of the car park and follow the minor road south until you reach a gate by a double bend, signposting the Centenary Way. Leave the road here and follow the Centenary Way along the track (passing and ignoring a bridlepath on your left) until you reach a stile and signs for the Wolds Way. Turn right and follow the Wolds Way, descending to the Wharram Percy deserted village. Pass through the village and follow the Wolds Way back uphill to the car park.

The paths can get very muddy so suitable footwear is required. This is a sheep and cattle grazing area therefore dogs must be kept on a lead.

The cache is a small screw cap container, only suitable for very small swaps and trackables.
