*NOTE: The Cache
description was updated on 10/25/08
I have placed five caches in Devil's Canyon, in the Chatsworth
area.
Devil's Wash
Devil's Diversion
Devil's Oak
Devil's Gate
Devil's Canyon
Please see
Devil's Canyon for Additional Waypoints, and trail Map.
There are several ways into the canyon, but things have become
difficult because of a construction project at the head of the
canyon that has the traditional way blocked. The best way now is to
park on Poema Place, west of Topanga Canyon Blvd, just before the
guard shack to Indian Hills Estates. Check in with the guard and
they will allow you access. Follow the green line on the west side
of the road to the trail head. At the trailhead, you want to go
down to the right, not up to the left.
Once in the canyon, you will go south about 100 feet to pickup
Devil's Wash, and then north for the others. The last cache is a
little over 3 miles from the car and about 400' in a very gradual
elevation gain. Trail is wide and good the whole way with several
creek crossings. Parts of the trail are through a wide dry wash, so
the middle of a rainstorm may not be the best time to do this.
WATCH OUT FOR POISON OAK. It
is abundant. There is none on, or over the trail, and there is none
anywhere near the caches. If this changes, please let me know.
There is no reason for anyone to come into contact with it, as long
as they keep their eyes open.
Devil's Diversion is named as such because you will be diverting
off of the main trail and up a game trail above the canyon. If you
are walking north, (from Devil's wash), just follow your needle. If
you are walking south, don't even think of it. Instead, continue on
until you cross the creek, then follow your needle. It's up a
little bit and there are some branches that might get in your way.
Just pick your path wisely and you won't have any problems. I had
placed two ammo cans with identical contents in the canyon. Both of
them burned up in the Sesnon Fire of October, '08. I had stocked
both of them with items that one could use when outdoors and said
that it was okay to take what one needed. No one did, and all that
good stuff sat there for two years until it burned up.
Now, we get the "No Frills" version. You are looking for a cammoed,
six inch round film tin with a logsheet. You will need your own
pen.
