another King Boreas cache (768)
Winona's most prominent land mark is Sugar Loaf. This cache site
will give you a great view of the area and compliments other Winona
bluff caches such as Garvin Gawk and Ryan's Rest. The cache is
located on the city owned land. I was going to make the Sugar Loaf
series caches a multi cache, but I was worried that a cache would
get stolen since the area is well hiked and biked.
Take Sugar Loaf Road which runs along the east side of Sugar Loaf
and take a right onto West Burns Valley Rd. I know of only one
parking place in the area and it is at 44 01.566 and 091 37.603
which is the City of Winona Booster Station. Park on the street and
be aware of private property. I would take note of the sign that
states "Beware of Rattle Snakes" in the spring/summer/fall. Walk up
to the water tank and take the trail that runs off to the left and
behind the tank. After that it is up the back of the bluff. Once at
the top, beware of the steep edges, and I would stay away from
them. I also wouldn't climb Sugar Loaf. The trail will take you to
the base of the rock. The view is awesome! The hiking trails for
all of the Sugar Loaf caches are very well defined. Some of the
time you are walking on old Jeep trails and some of the time on
well packed dirt/sand trails. THERE IS NO NEED TO LOOK ON THE STEEP
SIDE OF THE TRAILS. STAY AWAY FROM THE EDGES. I DON'T WANT SOMEBODY
TO GET HURT DOING ONE OF MY CACHES. USE COMMON SENSE!! Please cover
the cache as it was since this is a favorite spot for people to
come and climb. I wouldn't want to have to climb up there again to
replace it! The cache contains the normal odd and ends.

October 11, 2009 by sparkyfry (1913 found) Thirty fourth find of the day. I'm glad Bobcam insisted we get to Sugarloaf before it got close to being dark. Great hike up here, if tiring! Bobcam scored an impressive find on this one after we expanded the search area, which involves a lot of vertical changes in this setting. Thank you for the dramatic cache!

October 11, 2009 by Bobcam (14853 found) Great hide at a way cool location!! Wow, now that is what I call a climb. Made the ascension to mountain top with Sparkyfry this afternoon. What a view!! Hard to put it in words. Thanks for keeping this one going KB! (didn't see any trackables in the cache). TFTC. SL.

September 6, 2009 by kglowczewski (136 found) Oh my gosh this was a hike! Beautiful day but hot 86 degrees! Bring water when you hike up. We looked all over by the birch tree but we were convinced it was in the broken tree trunk. My sister nelt on the ground & I stood on her back trying to look into the tree trunk. Since we are short (5'4") we couldn't get a good look in the tree. We looked all over on the ground with no luck. It must have been burried under a rock. Be Careful as there are steep cliffs around this area! Wonderful view of Winona though. I would go back but would bring some water and a walking stick. Also we went down the creek trail and slid all the way down on our butts! Made it back with no broken bones.
