Golden Ears
Gallop
Golden Ears Provincial Park has many
kilometers of hiking and equestrian trails. This series of caches
will take you to some of my favorite areas in the park. It will
also show you four different cache types. To find the final you
will have to find 1 Traditional
Cache, 1 Multi-Cache (offset
Cache), 1 Letterbox Hybrid
and 1 Mystery or
puzzle cache.
- History
- The park was
named after the twin peaks of Mount
Blanshard
near the park's western boundary. This park was originally
part of Garibaldi Provincial Park. Golden Ears Park was
established in 1927.
- Cultural
Heritage - Human activity in Golden
Ears, both past and present, has been confined to the
accessible Alouette
Valley in
the south of the park. In the 1920s, the forested slopes of
the valley became the site of BC's greatest railroad logging
operation until a disastrous fire swept through the valley in
1931. The lake and its
forested surroundings were also the traditional hunting and
fishing grounds for the Douglas-Lillooet (Interior Salish)
and Katzie (Coast Salish) First Nations
peoples.
To complete the Golden Ears Gallop you must be
prepared for back country travel. Make sure some one knows were you
are and when you plan to return. These caches are all on well
marked trails, but the terrain can be difficult in some areas.
Lookout
Loop
Letterbox
The lookout trail makes a nice loop back to
the parking area and has a nice view of the lake. This cache will
take between 1 hour to 1.5 hours. Take your time and enjoy the
hike.
Letter Box Instructions:
Park at the above coordinates and take the
trail heading south crossing the board walk until it comes to a
fork. Take the lookout trail a to the 4 way intersection. Turn rite
towards the road. Follow this trail a short distance to the 6 KM
marker and cross the road. Now follow the Lookout Trail as it
climbs steadily for about 600m. You will see a trail sign follow
the arrow for the Lookout 400m. My GPS said it was only 200m to the
lookout. You will see 2 benches and, on a clear day, the lake. Look
under the roots behind the bench and you will find the cache. You
can return the way you came or follow the trail and it will take
you back to the road a few hundred meters past the trail you took
up.
