Geocache Description:

One of my favorite areas out near the California Emigrant Trail. High clearance vehicle recommended because of rocky, washed out dirt roads. Coordinates are an average of 150 readings with an estimated accuracy of 7.8 feet.

This area on the western edge of the Carson Sink contains a fairly large concentration of bizarre tufa formations. A friend of mine who lived near Pyramid Lake referred to these types of formations as "Mugwumps".
The formations were created eons ago when calcium carbonate precipitated out of underwater springs in the bottom of ancient Lake Lahontan. At it's peak aproximately 12,700 years ago, during a period known as the "Sehoo Highstand", the lake had a surface area of over 8,500 square miles, with it's largest component centered near here, at the location of the present-day Carson Sink.
