Marmal's excellent East Lothian Castles series will take you to some fabulous castles in the area. This series complements his, and focuses on some of the lesser known castles. There is little that remains of some of them, but others are easy to recognise.

There are actually no remains of the castle, but its site is worth a visit. The ridge is known as 'Castle Hill', which conceals in its grassy mound the almost non-existent remains of the little known North Berwick castle. The castle was held by three noble families, the MacDuffs, the Stewarts and the Lauders. The first 13th century 'Castle' was a wooden motte and bailey built by the MacDuffs Thanes of Fife.

For some reason the castle was abandoned in favour of the more secure Bass Rock castle some time before the 1420's and may have been used as a quarry.

A reconstruction of the castle and further information can be found here.
