Geocache Description:

Boscov's West / Ray's IGA / Carol's

My wife and I grew up in the Berks County and have very fond memories of extinct sites around the county. This is the third in a series of traditional caches that might bring back fond memories of long gone sites around our county. Many of us have passed these locations from the past with little regard to the lost local commercial history.

Before Target and Wall-Mart came to the area, there was Boscov’s. Although Boscov’s still has 39 stores in five states, the West store which opened in 1962, was closed years ago as they moved to the Berkshire Mall at the old John Wannamaker location (another possible cache?). As a family, we used to shop for school clothes, Christmas presents and general merchandise at Boscov’s West.

Next door to Boscov’s was Ray’s IGA grocery store. Many times I walked here with my grandfather to buy individual cans of A-Treat soda for a weekend of fishing. As the IGA stores pulled out of Reading, the building became a KidSports facility, which didn’t last very long. Now both Boscov’s and the IGA buildings are vacant.

Down the road slightly and across the street was one of the first “fast food” restaurants in the area – Carol’s. This occupied the building which is currently a notary shop. McDonald’s entered the game across the street from Carol’s. Eventually Carol’s closed. The walls used to be windows on three sides with large round pink and white 1970’s light fixtures hanging from the ceiling. There was a second Carol’s in Reading, but that too has closed.

This cache is placed in memory of Boscov’s West, Ray’s IGA and Carol’s and is located at a vantage point from which one could see two of the three stores mentioned. Please be aware of muggles as this is a high traffic area. Use your car to your advantage. This is a quick cache and dash.

Today a Food Lion grocery store and supplemental smaller stores exist in this location. There are no indications of what used to be here, other than the pictures on this cache page. The change in difficulty is due to more muggles than before.
