Geocache Description:

Elephant Butte Lake State Park is five miles north of Truth or Consequences. It can be reached via I-25 exit 79 or 83. Admission to all areas of the park is $5.00 per day per vehicle. An annual day use pass, valid for twelve months from date of purchase, is $40.00.

The Namesake Cache happens to be located on the Namesake Butte - that would be Elephant Butte. This cache is for those intrepid adventurers that will do anything to find and get to a geocache. Except during very low lake levels, Elephant Butte is an island in the lake. Will you rent a boat in order to sign the log?

Elephant Butte is a volcanic plug, evidence of this region’s volcanic past. Molten rock once flowed out of a volcano here and the hardened basalt of the butte is what remains from the vent. Rattlesnake Island is a maar, remains from a volcanic explosion, and the basalt-topped flat mesas to our west also demonstrate the fiery history.

In the cache you will find a log and a few trinkets. The cache is pretty close to the high water mark so it shouldn’t float away any time soon. But make sure to that your boat doesn’t float away while you are searching for the cache. Placed with permission.
