Geocache Description:

Lighthouse Overlook

Terrain is wheelchair accessible all the way. It's about .22 miles from the nearest parking. Cache will be an extremely easy find, in fact I will tell you right were it is due to it's location.

Cache is located in Robert Moses State Park which boarders The Fire Island National Seashore and The Fire Island Lighthouse. Do Not forget your camera! Follow the boardwalk to the hawk watch platform. Cache is located at ground level under the beginning of the ramp that goes up to the platform. With that info, you probably don't need a GPS.

Note: Do Not Walk On The Dunes!

Cache is a medium Rubbermaid Container with my usual swag. Including a new compass.

From www.fireislandlighthouse.com: The Fire Island Lighthouse is an active aid to navigation. It is open to the public for guided tower tours. Join our experienced staff for a panoramic view of the Atlantic Ocean, the Great South Bay, Fire Island, Long Island and the Manhattan Skyline. The Empire State Building is often visible on a clear day. There is an exhibit area, as well as a gift shop, located in the original Keeper's Quarters. The Fire Island Lighthouse is a perfect place for individuals, families, or groups to visit, any time of year.

History: An 89 foot stone tower was built here in 1827 and fitted with 14 oil lamps. In the 1850's the Lighthouse Board realized that the site was important enough to require a more powerful light, so the old tower was torn down and replaced with with the present 167 foot brick tower. A stone double keeper's dwelling was also built at theis time, with both the house and tower placed on a flagstone terrace.
