Geocache Description:

Come join us in Ashburn, Virginia on Sunday, October 2nd for an afternoon of tall tales and good eats!

Come share your tall tales with other NoVa cachers at Tijuana Flats in Ashburn, VA. The event starts at 2:30 pm - we'll have a TB swap at this informal gathering. For more information about Tijuana Flats, click here. Yes, they do have a kids menu...

There will be three pre-event activities to choose from!

When logging a note to confirm attendance, please indicate which of the 3 travel options (Bike, Hike or Caravan) you'll be using.

7:00 am (GLM) & 11:00 am (2Wheel'in) - A caching bike ride on the W&OD trail with local legends 2Wheel'in and GLM. The W&OD Trail is a paved 'rail trail' which extends from Washington, DC northwestward to Purcellville, VA. Road bikes, mountain bikes, kid's bikes, and everything in between will be able to navigate the trail with ease. The total length of the ride will be about 12 miles round trip. 8 NEW caches have been placed along the route so far! Meet at the Farmwell Station Middle School (N 39 02.143 W 77 28.374). Satellite Map Of Parking Area/Start Point

A word from 2Wheel'in and GLM:

Just a quick, but detailed note to those cachers electing the bike ride portion of the event. You may wish to print this note for reference: we have “cue sheets” that we will hand out before the start of the ride, caches are identified on a topo map of the route, as are the full cache names and coordinates. Riding time for the 12.5 mile route is approximately 1 hour and 20 minutes, leaving approximately 2 hours for hunting caches. There are a total of 18 caches along the route, 8 of those are new and were placed for the event. Note that one of the existing caches is a “Puzzle” cache GCNRN4, if you have solved the puzzle the final cache location is along the route. Six of the caches are accessed from the gravel horse path that parallels the W&OD, all others are accessed from the paved trail.

Skinny tire riders (700 X 23C to 28C) need to watch their speed and traction on the horse path - it has some spots with a very loose surface. Hybrid/Comfort or MTB riders should have no problem. Two of the existing caches require stream crossing (on foot) one you’ll stay dry, the other will get your feet wet. Almost all the caches are within 10 feet of the trail(s), five require leaving the trail and hiking (no bushwhacking required) from 50 to 400 feet. Leaders will “stand guard” at the bicycles when off-trail hiking is required.

WARNING: We will not be the only riders on the W&OD, the trail gets VERY heavy use on weekends, for your own safety (and that of others) please: Stay to the right - Ride no more than 2 abreast - Get off the paved surface when you stop - Signal your intentions & announce when you are passing - Helmets are not mandatory, but are encouraged - Bring a water bottle (or two), and a snack if you wish. The group does not have to stay together, you may certainly ride at your own pace - we can find caches individually or hunt as a group. There will be a “guide” near the front, as well as a “sweep” at the rear, riding no faster than the slowest rider. You can’t get lost, it’s an out-and-back route. Bring a pen or pencil…most of the caches are micros, but that does not mean that they are all “tiny“, there are some surprise containers. Cycling and Caching have at least one thing in common -- FUN!!! The ride leaves at 11 am sharp, rain or shine…think shine!

List Of Existing Caches For The Bike Ride/Caravan:
List Of **NEW** Caches On Bike/Caravan Route:

11:00 am - A hike along Goose Creek for the entire Goose Creek Series, led by Airsafety. Meet at the trail head near the Goose Creek Golf Course; access via Golf Club Road (N 39 05.138 W 77 30.754). The hike will be 5 miles round trip, so bring plenty of water, a light snack, bug spray, your camera, and comfortable boots. The B Team is allowing hike participants who have found these caches previously to re-log them on the day of the event! We'll be monitoring FRS Channel 2.0 Satellite Map Of Parking Area

List Of Caches For Hike:

7:00 am and 10:00 am - Cache Caravan with world famous Gaiter Man. The caravans will cover the W&OD caches by car and foot, stopping at various points and walking the W&OD Trail to the cache sites. This will be a great option for those with small children, or for cachers who may not be up for a 12 mile ride. There will be two caravans - one for early risers at 7:00 and another one at 10:00am. The starting point is the same as for the bike ride; see above for coordinates and parking map.

Hope to see you all there!
