in the heart of the village...
located on land that used to be the playground for the elementary
school. the school was burned in the late '60s by the same kid that
burned the high school. the building with the circled glass blocks
was part the school. the creek at the base of the slope flows to
the cumberland river. within this village, ten distinct house types
were built in the early 1900's with the village being complete by
december, 1918. the houses range from the very simple one-story
vernacular homes to ornate three-story colonial revival homes. all
were owned by the dupont company until 1946 when the houses were
sold to the workers of the dupont plant. today, the village remains
as the only example of a planned company town in middle tennessee.
there have been no major intrusions into the area and the
streetscapes are much as they were back in 1918.
