Geocache Description:

A wander around the town of Chepstow, passing the castle and returning through the town itself. Good gravel paths or pavements all the way. Should take about 1½ hours. Final cache is 5" x 4" x 2" box.

Chepstow is a very historic border town with the oldest stone
castle in the country, building starting in 1067, a year after the
Norman Conquest. The town has many historic buildings and is still
partially encircled with an impressive medieval wall. The present
bridge across the Wye replaced an earlier medieval one which in
turn replaced the original Roman bridge which was a little further
upriver past the Castle.
The co-ordinates are for the Castle car park which is near the first stage of the cache. There is a charge for all the main car parks in Chepstow (see information boards for when charges apply).

Find the answers at each waypoint to work out where the next one is. You will also need the answers to complete the final location, so write them all down as you get them. Note the letter I is not used.

A___ B___ C___ D___ E___ F___ G___ H___ J___ K___

Clue 1: Opposite the entrance to the car park is a building with a pillared and curved central facade This is a particular type of building spelled out by the letters making up its name. The number of letters that make up what it is = A. Use this number to help you complete the next waypoint. Continue up past the castle towards the Dell. As the
path levels out, look out for a small gateway through the town wall on your left. Go through it into another car park.

Clue 2: Roger Bigod N51° 38.517 W002° 40.A13.
Here you will find a major work by Roger Bigod which took him several years to complete from 12B2-C2 . Walk up the road out of the car park and turn left at the top into Welsh street at N51° 38.478 W002° 40.648. The street was so named because when the English ruled Wales, the Welsh were not allowed to live within the town. Many Welsh towns have a ‘Welsh’ street where the local population had to live. You’ll find an excellent hardware shop here that sells click lock cache boxes. Continue down Welsh street towards The George Hotel and turn left through the medieval town arch to the next clue.

Clue 3: The clockmaker N51° 38.4A0 W002° 40.5C0.
Eyes down by the town arch to find out the year when Benjamin Greening II died, 18D2.

Clue 4: The boatman N51° 38.D03 W002° 40.D3C.
Walk down through the town along pavements paved with silver and gold and say hello to the boatman, a modern (and rather controversial) sculpture which was erected in 200E.

Clue 5: Chepstow hero N51° 38.D(A-E)0 W002°40.(E+1)1E.
Here you will find Chepstow’s war memorial and a German U-Boat gun from U91 which was presented to the town after the Great War by King George V. You are looking for a man, a Victoria Cross hero of Gallipoli who was so famous they named him twice. He died on the F5th April 1915.

Clue 6: Into England N51° 38.(D+F)B(B+F) W002° 40.(D-F)1B.
Now we need to visit England briefly. Continue down through the town looking out for the 17th Century Alms houses on the left and keep going on past the castle. You need to find Anno Domini 1GHJ.

Clue 7: Can you hear the music? N51° 38.(G-1)1(G-E) W002° 40.(H+H)3(G-J).
Walk along the river side and count how many sides this structure has for K.

Final location: N51° 38.(K-F)(F+H)(H+J) W002° 40.(H+F)(K-H)K
Now you can complete the final coordinates for the cache which is a small plastic container in a rather secluded
part of Chepstow, so take the opportunity to put your feet up for bit while you sign the log.
