Geocache Description:

Happy Birthday to Aurora! Enjoy all 4 caches we've hidden here.

The Centennial Cache was placed by our walking group as part of the 100-year celebration by the City of Aurora, Minnesota. Aurora was an early mining town on the Mesabi Iron Range. Our celebration was held from July 1-6, 2003,and what a celebration it was!!! The cache is placed along the Mesabi Trail which is a trail in progress and will eventually stretch 132 miles from Grand Rapids to Ely, Minnesota. By July, 2003, there will be 60 paved miles complete. The Mesabi Trail is a multi-use trail for walkers, bicyclists, in-line skaters, cross country skiers, snowshoe enthusiasts, and, in a few places, snowmobilers. It skirts the edge of active mines and 300-foot-deep pit lakes as it twists and winds through an important part of Minnesota history. Travelers along the trail can see beautiful forest areas, wildlife, and quaint little towns along the way. The trail is fast becoming a recognized area for bicycling. This summer it hosted the time trials for the Great River Bicycle Festival in June and part of the Habitat 500 in July. The cache is just off the Mesabi Trail. You can bushwhack, but it is much easier and more beautiful to take the trail which is paved and handicapped accessible. Cache is near Benchmark O'Malley #AC5024. You might take further advantage of this beautiful trail. For more information check out www.mesabitrail.com. Happy geocaching to you! We hope you enjoy all of our caches. The best and safest place to park (please don't park along the highway) is in the south side of the parking lot for the business located at N47.31.848 W092.15.380 (The business has given permission). Cache container is an ammo can and is well-hidden because the trail is used so much. Please be careful if there are other walkers around. The original cache contained Travel Bug--Ms. Aurora, several children's toys, hiking "gadgets," Taconite Mining Samples, Sacagawea Dollars, miscellaneous 'treasures." There is a camera in the cache. Please take a photo of yourself and leave the camera in the cache. We will post the photos when the camera is full.
