Located at the top St. Mary's Falls
Found this old cabin when I first moved out here and have been wanting to place a cache here for a long time.

I needed to place the cache to the South/SE of the cabin to insure it was not in the open.

You will find it about 100 feet up the hill and hidden between some rocks on the ground (geo rock stack)

It is a standard ammo can

  • Access from the West at Wye Campground via Road 381 (~1500 Vertical Feet) - I think this route is shorter and easier. If you have a 4x4 you might get real close - clearance is the key. On the way there on this route you will be in the shadow of Mt. Rosa which seems to provide some of the head waters to all merge for St. Mary's Falls. Total trip can vary depending on how close you can drive, I would plan around 5-8 miles
or
  • from the East via Helen Hunt Falls / Gold Camp Road (~2000 Vertical Feet)- On this route you have the ability to really spend an entire day caching total trip about 5.5 miles (if you come from Helen Hunt Falls) 7 miles from Gold Camp

Dianne and I came on our way to hike up Stove Top Mountain (we ran out of time before getting to the summit). The really heavy snow for October made the approach a bit tougher than I expected and made me worried about the find. I had one foot of snow on the steep slope leading to the cache. I was worried about finding the cache in the snow but after checking the second place where I thought I would hide this, I found it. The cabin was interesting. It appears to have collapsed and then been partially rebuilt for temporary occupancy. Thanks for bringing us somewhere interesting!

What a wonderful little hidden cabin...so thanks for pointing it out. We debated about turing around here as we were on our way up to Stove Top Mtn. for our safety, due the rain and thunder all around us...but...the show must go on. I dropped a T/B. TFTC

I had no idea the trail was so nice all the way out here. Thanks for taking me to an interesting area. Swapped trackables.

This was my first time hiking up the St. Mary's Falls trail, and I enjoyed the hike and the views. Quite the cabin up here that looks like it still gets some use with that barrel stove. Kwbforest and I came right down to the cache (excellent coords considering the slope) from the nearby Stove Top cache. Then it was a nice walk back along the falls as the sun was setting. Thanks for the cache, SL.

Pretty cool cabin up here. I have never been up this trail this far before. We grabbed it on the way out after getting stove pipe far above. TFTC SL.
